Add 1 c. salt to 1 gallon boiling water, pour over 2 gallon cukes, let stand 24 hours. Pour off salty water and slice cukes into thin rounds. Boil 1 quart water, add 1 rounded T.powdered alum. Pour over cukes, let stand 24 hours.

Pour off, cover with syrup:
2 quarts boiling vinegar and 4 cups sugar, let stand 24 hours. Pour off syrup and add 2 cups sugar, boil and pour over pickles, let stand 24 hours. Pour off and add 1 t. cinnamon, 1 t. cloves, 1 t. celery seed, and sugar to taste, bring to a boil.Pack cukes in jars, por hot syrup over and seal in jars. (can use mixed pickling spice in place of the different spices.)
