2 tsp olive oil
1 onion, chopped
1/2 carrot, chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
1 cup dried green or yellow split peas, picked over, rinsed and drained
1/2 - 1 cup ham, diced
1 tsp dried marjoram
3/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp freshly ground pepper

In a medium nonstick saucepan, heat oil. Saute the onions, carrot and garlic until softened, about 5 minutes. Add split peas and 4 cups of water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, until the peas are tender, stirring once, about 1 hour. Add ham, marjoram, salt and pepper; heat until serving temperature.
