2 Cups white flour
2 Cups brown sugar
1/2 cups shortening
1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
1 tsp soda
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cut shortening into flour and brown sugar as for pie crust. Remove 1 cup and reserve for topping. Make a well in the center of remaining flour and sugar mix and put in egg, soda, sour milk and vanilla. Mix by hand. Put in 9 x 9 greased square pan, sprinkle with reserved topping mix and bake in 350 º oven for 40 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
