Ingredients:  
Combine the following 3 ingredients and bring to a boil:
1 c chopped dates
1-1/2 c boiling water
1 tsp soda

Cream together: 3/4 c shortening; 1 c sugar; 2 eggs. When well-blended add to date mixture.

Blend or sift: 1-1/2 c flour; 1/2 tsp salt; 1 tsp soda. Add the above ingredients to the date mixture. Blend well. This will be a thin, fairly wet batter.

Topping: 1/2 c sugar; 1 c chocolate chips; 1 c nuts; 1/2 c coconut (if desired)

Pour batter into greased 9x13-inch cake pan. Sprinkle topping over batter. Bake at 350-degrees for about 1/2 hour.
