3 squares of baking chocolate
1 1/2 c. milk
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1/2 c. shortening
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp.baking soda
1 T. water
1 Empty 3 lb. coffee can

Cook chocolate squares, 1/2 c. milk and 1/2 c. sugar over low heat until thick, stirring constantly, then set aside to cool.

Cream, 1/2 c. shortening, 1 c. sugar and 2 eggs. Add the chocolate mixture.

Sift 2 c. flour with 1/2 tsp. salt. Add alternately with 1 c. milk to creamed mixture. Add 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 tsp. baking soda mixed with 1 T. water.

Grease and flour 3 lb. coffee can. Put pudding mixture in can and cover loosely with aluminum foil. In a large pan bring to a boil enough water to come halfway up coffee can. Put the coffee can in, cover and steam at a full boil for 20 min. Reduce heat and continue steaming for another 70-75 min.

Hard sauce:
Mix softened butter, powdered sugar and a pinch of salt until frosting consistency.

Turn pudding out onto plate, slice and serve warm with large dollop of hard sauce. Sprinkle with nutmeg.
