2 1/2 cups cake flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
14 oz pkg. German chocolate squares, cut up
1/2 cup water
1 cup butter, softened
1 3/4 cups sugar
4 eggs, separated
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup buttermilk

Grease and flour three 9 inch round cake pans. Preheat oven 350º

Sift dry ingredients together and set aside. In a small mixing bowl add the water, microwave to hot. Add German chocolate and stir until chocolate has melted.

In a large mixing bowl, beat butter until creamy, gradually add sugar, beat until fluffy. Add egg yolks one at a time beating well after each. Add German chocolate and vanilla and mix well. alternately add four mixture and buttermilk. Beat until smooth.

In a medium bowl beat the eggs whites on high until stiff peaks form. Fold in the batter.

Divide batter into the three pans. Bake 30-35 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes then remove from pans. Cool.

Frost with Coconut Pecan frosting.
