Ingredients:
5-1/2 to 6 c. all-purpose flour
2 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. sugar
2 pkg. dry yeast
3 tbsp. shortening
1 egg, beaten
sesame seeds

Directions:
Combine 3 c. flour, salt, sugar, and yeast in mixer bowl. Stir at slow speed to blend. Add shortening and 2 c. very warm water. Blend at low speed. Mix at high speed for 3 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally with rubber spatula. Add 2-1/2 to 3 c. flour. Mix by hand enough to make a stiff dough.
Turn onto lightly floured surface. Knead for 5 to 7 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Add flour to keep from sticking to surface. Shape into ball. Place in lightly greased bowl. Turn, greasing all surfaces. Cover with cloth. Let rise in warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size. Punch down! Turn dough out of bowl; cut into 2 equal parts. Cut each part into 3 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope about 12 inches long. Braid ropes together loosely. Seal ends by pinching ends together. Place on greased baking sheet and cover. Let rise until doubled. Brush gently with egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake in a 375º oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on racks.
