2 c flour
1 T salt
1/4 c sugar
2 pkgs. Active dry yeast
2 1/4 c milk
1/4 c cooking oil
1 egg

Oven 350º. Using solid shortening, generously grease two 9x5 or 8x4 loaf pans. Combine flour, salt, sugar, yeast in large mixer bowl. Heat in saucepan over low heat until very warm (120-130º) milk and oil. Add egg and warm liquid to flour mixture. Beat 1/2 minute at low speed, 3 minutes at med. speed. By hand, gradually stir in another 4 to 5 c flour to form a soft dough. Knead on floured surface until smooth and elastic--about 1 min. Place dough in greased 2 1/2 qt. bowl. Turn dough to grease all sides. Cover dough; let rise in warm place in greased pans. Cover; let rise in war place until light, 30-45 min. Bake for 40-50 min. until loaf sounds hollow when lightly tapped. Remove from pans immediately. Cool on rack. Brush top of loaf with melted butter, if desired.
