Cake:
2 scant c. flour (plain)
1 c. sugar
1/2 t. soda
3/4 c. buttermilk
1/2 c. shortening (butter or Crisco)
1 egg
1/4 t. salt
1 t. vanilla flavoring

Frosting:
1 stick butter or 1/2 c. cream
1 c. nuts or coconut (or both)
1-1/2 c. brown sugar
Directions:
Directions:
Cake: Mix shortening and sugar, beat in egg. Mix flour, soda and salt together. Add to sugar mixture; add buttermilk gradually and vanilla. Pour in greased pan. Cook at 325º for 25 to 30 minutes.

Frosting: Melt butter and brown sugar together; add nuts etc.; spread over cooked cake. Place under broiler until it bubbles.
