2 cups hot water
1 (18 oz.) package dates, finely cut
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
3 cups sifted flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup chopped nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Pour hot water over dates and let stand until cool. Cream shortening and sugar; add eggs and beat well. Add flour and sift with baking powder and salt; add nuts. Stir in the dates and the water and mix well.

Pour mixture into 2 well-greased loaf pans. Bake at 350º for 45 to 50 minutes.

This recipe belonged to Grandma Ebben. We found it in an old cookbook of hers and I thought that it would be nice to have it included.
