1/2 c shortening
1/4 c water
2 c sugar
1 8 oz can applesauce
1 1lb 1 oz pumpkin pie filling
2 egs
2 1/2 c sifted flour
2 t salt
1 T baking soda
1 1/2 t pumpkin pie spice
1/2 c finely chopped dates
1/2 c finely chopped golden raisins
1/2 c nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening, water and sugar thoroughly at medium speed of electric mixer. Add applesauce and pie filling and beat 2 minutes. Add egs one at a time, beating after each addition. Sift together flour, salt, soda and pumpkin pie spice. Gradually add to creamed mixture. Beat at medium speed of electric mixer for 3 minutes. After all four are added, blend in nuts, dates and raisins. Pour batter into 2 greased and floured square or round 9 inch cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes, or until wood pick inserted in center of cake comes out clean. Cool in pans on rack for 5 minutes remove, cool thoroughly and serve with whipped cream or ice cream if desire, or cut and serve directly from layers.
