2 T. fresh grated orange peel,
1 c. fresh squeezed orange juice,
1 c. pitted dates,
3/4 c. shortening,
1 1/2 c. sugar,
3 eggs,
3 c. sifted flour,
1 1/2 tsp. soda,
1 tsp. mace or nutmeg,
1/2 tsp. salt,
1 c. buttermilk,
3/4 c. chopped pecans.

Preheat oven 350º. Grate peel before squeezing juice. Set aside. Place 1/2 c. each of orange juice and dates in blender . Whirl at high speed until pureed. Add remaining juice and dates. Whirl until smooth. In large bowl cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Sift together dry ingredients. Add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beating until smooth after each addition. Stir in reserved peel, date mixture and nuts. Blend well. Pour into 3 well greased 9" pans. Bake 30 minutes or until done. Cool on rack.

This recipe my mother, Barbara Carney, always made for Christmas Day. It is sweet and rich. Gets better every day!!
