1/2 up shortening (1/4 crisco and 1/4 butter)
1/4 cup backed brown sugar
1 egg yokd
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 cup sifted flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
egg whites - beaten
finely chopped nuts (who knows the amount - she just estimated!)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375
Mix all ingredients and roll into 1" balls. Dip in beaten egg whites and roll in nuts.
Place about 1" apart on ungreased baking sheet and bake about 5 minutes.
Remove from oven. Quickly press thumb gently on each cookie. Return to oven and bake 8 minutes longer. Put candied fruit or a nut in the print.
