1/2 C Shortening 1/3 C Chopped Walnuts
1 1/3 C Brown Sugar 2 C Flour
2 Eggs 1 Tsp Baking Soda
1 C Raisins 1 tsp Cinnamon
1/2 tsp Nutmeg 1/2 tsp Cloves
1/2 tsp Salt 1 C Hot Applesauce

Directions:
Sift spices, soda and salt with flour. Set aside. Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs. Stir in raisins and nuts. Add flour alternately with applesauce.Bake in shallow well greased pan.(13 X 9) 45 minutes at 350º.

This was my Grandmothers recipe. She passed when we were in Iceland and I always remember her as the Sweetest person I ever knew. For many years I used this as the base for my Christmas Fruitcake.
