2 cups sugar
˝ cup butter
4 eggs separated
2/3 cup milk
2 cups cake flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
˝ teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening with only 1 cup of sugar (reserve 1 cup). Separate eggs beating yolks until thick and creamy, reserve whites. Add yolks to butter and sugar mixture. Add sifted dry ingredients flour, baking powder, ˝ teaspoon salt alternately with milk having added vanilla to milk. Batter should be smooth. Divide batter into two oiled 9 inch layered pans. Now beat egg whites until frothy and then add cream of tartar and remaining ˝ teaspoon salt. Continue beating until stiff. Fold in remaining ˝ teaspoon salt. Continue beating until stiff. Fold in remaining cup of sugar and continue to beat. Divide this mixture over batter in each layer pan and spread evenly. Over top of egg whites sprinkle 1 tablespoon sugar and ˝ teaspoon cinnamon that has been blended. Sprinkle ˝ cup shredded almonds or walnuts over all. Bake in 350 degree oven about 40 minutes. When done, cool layers in pan before removing. Put together with vanilla or chocolate custard filling.
