1 c. chopped dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. hot water
1 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs well beaten
1 ¾ c. flour
1 T. cocoa (heaping)
½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
¾ c. chopped nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Add soda to chopped dates, cover with water and cook. Let cool. Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and mix well. Add shifted ingredients, then vanilla and date mixture
Pour into greased 9x13 pan and sprinkle with chocolate chips and nuts. Bake 375º for 40 minutes.
