1 c. sugar
1 c. butter
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar

Directions:
Cream butter, sugar, egg and vanilla well, until light. (Butter is best, but can substitute mararine. Sift flour, soda, and cream of tarter. Blend well into butter mixture. Nip off small peices to make little dough balls. Press flat with floured hand or small glass. Place on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 325º for 15 minutes, until golden. (Hot oven makes coodie crisp.) Store in tin box or can. Will stay crisp for weeks. The tin lard can in Grandma Whitings pantry was a grandchild's reward and delight.
