2 cups sugar
2 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup milk
dash of salt
1/4 cup unsalted butter cut into bits
2 tsp. vanilla extract

Directions:
Directions:
Generously grease a 12 inch plate. Mix sugar, cocoa, milk and salt in a small saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Boil until it reaches a softball stage (240 degrees on a candy thermometer).
Stir in butter and vanilla and continue to beat until the candy begins to set. When set cut into squares. Should make about 18 pieces.

From Fanny Farmer. My parents would make this as a treat for themselves after all the kids were in bed and from the smell as we were falling asleep we knew we would wake up to a chocolate treat.
