1/3 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. cloves
2 tsp. soda
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cinnamon
pinch of salt
1 cup raisins
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 cups applesauce

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg, sift dry ingredients together; add to mixture, then add raisins, applesauce and vanilla. Bake at 350º for 30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Let cool then ice with:
Caramel Icing
1 tbsp. Crisco
1 tbsp syrup
2 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup milk
Cook this until soft ball stage. Then add this to mixture: 1/3 cup Crisco, 2/3 cup powdered sugar, 4 tbsp. hot milk, 1 tsp. vanilla. This makes a thick icing which most people like.
