1/2 cup shortening or 1/2 cup oil or 1/4 lb oleo "I use oleo or oil" says Mom.
3/4 cup cocoa
1 cup boiling water
1/2 cup buttermilk
3 eggs
2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
1 t baking powder
1 t soda

ICING - MINUTE BOIL FUDGE FROSTING
Put in skillet or sauce pan 2 oz finely cut chocolate
"or I use 4 T cocoa".
1 1/2 cups sugar
7 T milk
2 T each spry and butter "I just use 4 T of butter"
1 T corn syrup
1/4 t salt.
1 t vanilla to be added later

Mash shortening slightly and add cocoa and boiling
water. "Add water to cocoa and stir up before adding to shortening." Add sugar and eggs one at a time, beat after each egg. Sift flour baking powder and soda. Add to mixture and mix in well. Add buttermilk last. Mix and pour into greased and floured pans. Bake at 350 º. "One pan or two, whichever you want".

ICING
Bring slowly to a full rolling boil. Stirring constantly and boil briskly for one minute. Cool to luke warm. Add 1 t vanilla & beat until thick enough to spread. "I cook till it forms a soft ball in cold water". Blinda & Becka are still working on this technique.

This is a cake we all know and love. Mom made it
frequently when we were all home. She was the expert at making this cake. Blinda and Rebecca
are carrying on the tradition by making the cake
for family gatherings. Keith always liked to scrap
the skillet that Mom made the icing in. He always
thought she cleaned the pan too much. A TRUE
FAMILY TRADITION...
