1 cup chopped dates (buy them already chopped)

1 tsp. baking soda

1 cup + 3 tbsp. hot water

1 cup sugar

2 cubes softened margerine

2 eggs

1 tsp. vanilla

2 cups flour

1/2 tsp. salt

1 tbsp. baking cocoa (I use Hersheys)

1 cup chocolate chips

1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven 350º

Add soda and water to chopped dates in small bowl. Set aside.
In large bowl, cream margerine, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until fluffy. Add dry ingredients and date mixture. Beat by hand until mixed. Add 1/2 cup chocolate chips. Pour into greased 9X13 pan.
Sprinkle remaining chocolate chips and 1/2 cup chopped nuts evenly on top. Bake 40 min.
