Hamburger Vegetable Soup Recipe

1 pound ground beef
1 cup chopped onions
1 cup diced potatoes
1 cup sliced carrots
1 cup shredded cabbage
1 cup sliced celery
4 cups tomatoes (canned)
5 cups water
1/4 cup rice
4 teaspoons salt
1 bay leaf
1/4 teaspoon basil
1/4 teaspoon thyme

Cook the ground beef and onions together until all the pink has disappeared and
the meat is lightly browned. Drain off excess fat. Add all the remaining
ingredients. Bring the mixture to a boil. Cover and simmer for 1 hour. Note:
tomato juice may be substituted for canned tomatoes. Also firm dumplings may
be added, which are very good in it.
