3/4 c. shortening, butter or margarine
1 c. sugar
1/4 c. molasses
1 egg
2 tsp. baking soda
2 c. flour, sifted
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt

Directions:
Directions:
Melt shortening, butter or margarine in a 3 or 4 quart saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat and let cool. Add sugar, molasses and egg; beat well. Sift together dry ingredients and add to the liquid mixture. Mix well and chill. Form in 1 inch balls, roll in granulated sugar and place on greased cookie sheet 2 inches apart. Bake at 375º for 8-10 minutes.
