Combine and set aside:

1 C. dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 C. hot water

Cream:

½ C. shortening
1 C sugar
2 eggs

Sift together:

1 ½ C. flour
½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. cocoa

Add date mixture to creamed mixture. Add flour mixture. Bake in a 9 x 13 inch pan. Sprinkle top with about 1 cup chocolate chips. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Cut while warm.
