Most of us don’t have cow poo lying around. You can purchase the less fragrant, pasteurized, dried version at any garden shop.
Manure Tea Bags make great gifts for gardeners. Just cut double-thickness cheesecloth into squares large enough to hold a palmful of dried manure in the middle. Gather each square up with a twine tie, ala bouquet garni! Seal several in a plastic bag. Use a watering can as the gift basket, with plant seeds, tools, gloves, etc. Add an “Instructions” tag: the recipient should soak a bag in the watering can overnight in a ventilated area. Before watering, dispose of the bag or reuse the manure in garden soil.
For big waterings at home, add dried manure to a burlap bag or old pillow case. [Soo, that’s what old pillowcases are for…] Soak over several nights in a plastic bucket or bin (well ventilated!), and water your garden with the tea as you would any liquid plant fertilizer. Reuse the manure in garden soil. Store leftover tea in plastic jugs, with lids loose for ventilation.
For transplants, soak the root ball in the tea overnight before replanting.
Safe for your plants' foliage, too.
And adding a small amount of liquid dish soap to the tea deters several types of garden pests.
