2 medium oranges
2 1/4 cups sugar
1 cup nuts
1 1/2 cup seeded raisins
2 cups sifted flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2/3 cups shortening
1 tsp vanilla
3 eggs, well beaten
1 cup sour milk or buttermilk

Squeeze juice from oranges and add 3/4 cup sugar. Cut orange skins in quarters and remove all of the white pulp and membrane. Put yellow rind and raisins through the food chopper, using finest knife. Mix, and sift flour, soda, salt. Cream shortening until soft and smooth; gradually add remaining 1 1/2 c sugar, creaming until very fluffy.Beat in vanilla and eggs, then fruit-nut mixture. Add flour alternately with sour milk, beating well after each addition. Turn into 2 greased loaf pans and bake in slow oven 300º about 1 1/2 hrs. Remove and pour at once the orange juice-sugar mixture over the cakes. Cool in pans and allow to stand several hours or overnight before cutting.

Chop nuts with knife by hand, not thru chopper.
Bake cake in one big flat pan- 12/15 - about 60 minutes.
