1/3c lard
1c brown sugar
1 egg-beaten
13/4c flour
11/2t baking powder
1/4t salt
Filling:
3/4c chopped dates
1/3c water
1/4c granulated sugar
2T chopped nut meats

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening,add brown sugar, gradually add beaten egg.Sift flour, measure and sift with baking powder and salt, add to creamed mixture and mix thoroughly. Roll out to 1/4 in. thickness. Cook dates, water and sugar on low heat about 5 min. Avoid scorching. Remove and cool, add chopped nuts, spread filling on cookie dough and roll as jelly roll, chill in refrigerator for 1 hour, then slice and bake in hot oven 10 minutes at 400 degrees.
