Directions:
Heat oven to 300º. Grease and line pans with waxed paper. I used 8 small 6x3" pans. Sift first 7 ingredients together. Combine next 11 ingredients with 1/2 cup of flour in a bowl; mix until all fruit is well coated. Beat shortening in large mixing bowl until creamy; slowly add sugar, continuing until light and creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition until mixture is smooth, creamy, and blended. Stir in flour mixture and lemon juice; beat smooth. Add fruit mixture; stir until mixed. Turn into pans. Decorate the top with candied fruit. Bake in a slow oven for 11/2 hrs. or until done. Cool on wire cake rack before removing from pans.

I have tried to recreate this family tradition the best I could. Mom made these every Christmas and sold them to people all over town. Enjoy!
