3/4 C soft shortening
1 C brown sugar
1 egg
1/4 C molasses
1 1/4 C sifted flour
1/4 t salt
2 t soda
1/2 t cloves
1 t cinnamon
1 t ginger

Directions:
Directions:
Mix thoroughly first 4 ingredients. Next mix all the rest of the ingredients together then add to the first mixture. Mix all together then chill dough. Roll into balls the size of large walnuts. Dip tops in sugar. Place sugared side up, 3" apart on greased sheet. Sprinkle each cookiewith 2 - 3 drops of water to produce cracked surface. Bake until set but not hard, about 10 - 12 min. at 375º.
