1 C. dates, finely chopped
1-1/4 C. boiling water
1 tsp. baking soda
3/4 C. Crisco shortening
1 C. white sugar
1-3/4 C. all purpose flour
2 large eggs
3/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder

Directions:
Directions:
MIx dates, water and 1 tsp. baking soda together and let cool. Beat sugar and Crisco until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time and beat well. Mix all dry ingredients together and add alternately with the date mixture, beating well. Place mixture in greased and floured 9x12 baking pan and sprinkle topping over top.

Topping:
1/2 C. semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 C. brown sugar
1/2 C. chopped walnuts or pecans

Bake at 350 for 35 mins.

I have no idea where Mom ever got this recipe, as I've never seen it anywhere else. Maybe she made it up herself, I don't know. But this is a cake she made a lot in the 60s. It is very, very moist and very delicious. The topping sinks down into the cake as it is baking and it is heavenly served warm with a little scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream on it. Also pretty darn tasty cold as well.
