31/2 Cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 Tsp baking soda
1/2 Tsp salt
1 Cup butter or margarine - softened
2 Cups packed light-brown sugar OR 2 2/3
Cups granulated brown sugar
2 Eggs
1/2 Cup buttermilk
1 Tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 Cups chopped walnuts, pecans or other nuts
2 Cups halved candied cherries
2 Cups cut-up pitted dates

Directions:

Sift together flour, baking soda and salt into bowl and set aside. Put butter into bowl of mixer and add brown sugar and eggs. Beat until mixture is light and fluffy. Add buttermilk, vanilla extract and flour mixture. Mix well. Stir in nuts, cherries and dates. Drop by teaspoonfuls on lightly greased cookie sheets. Top each with nut half if desired. Bake in moderate oven (350º) 12 to 15 minutes, or until lightly browned.
