Sift into a 2 quart bowl:
1 2/3 cup sifted cake flour
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cloves
sour: 1/3 cup pet evaporated milk with 2 tsp. vinegar

Directions:

Add to flour mixture the soured milk and 1/2 cup soft shortening, 1/3 cup water and 1 tsp. vanilla.
Beat hard 2 minutes; add 2 unbeaten eggs then beat 2 more minutes. Put into greased and floured pans (one 9 inch square pan or two 8 inch round cake pans). Bake on center rack in 350º oven 40 minutes for 9 inch pans or 30 minutes for 8 inch pans, or until cakes pull from sides of pan. Remove from oven and let stand 10 minutes before turning out to cool.
