2 lbs. stew beef or kabob meat cut into 1" squares
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 clove garlic
1 medium onion, sliced
1 or 2 bay leaves
1 T. salt
1 tsp. sugar
½ tsp. pepper
½ tsp. paprika
Dash cloves
6 carrots, pared and cut into 1" pieces
4 potatoes, pared and cut into quarters
1 lb. small, white onions

In large pot or Dutch oven, thoroughly brown meat in 2 T. hot shortening, turning often. Add 2 cups hot water and next 9 ingredients. Cover; simmer for 1½ hrs., stirring occasionally to keep from sticking. Remove bay leaves and garlic. Add vegetables. Cover and cook 30 to 40 minutes, or till vegetables are tender. Carefully transfer beef and vegetables to serving bowl. Reserve pot liquid.
Gravy: skim most of fat from liquid. Combine ½ flour and 1 cup of water till smooth. Stir slowly into hot liquid. Cook and stir until bubbly. Cook and stir 3 minutes, and pour over beef and vegetables. Serve with dinner rolls or over rice.
