2/3 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 c. cold water
2 eggs (separated)
3 c. flour
2 tsp. soda
1 tsp. vanilla

Burn 1/2 c. sugar. Add 1/2 c. boiling water. Boil a few minutes and cool. Cream shortening and sugar. Add beaten egg yolks and 1 c. water and burnt sugar syrup. Sift flour 6 times to small portion of sifted flour, add soda. Add flour without soda first, then vanilla, rest of flour. Fold in beaten egg whites. Bake in moderate 350 oven, 30 - 35 minutes.
3/4 c. brown sugar
3 T. butter
2 T. milk
Bring to boil and cook to dissolve. Thicken with
powdered sugar.
