1 cup dates (chopped & packed)
1 cup boiling water
1 tsp. baking soda
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup butter
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 cup sifted flour
1/2 cup pecans, chopped

Directions:
Directions:
Pour the boiling water over dates and add soda. Let stand while mixing other ingredients. Cream together butter, sugar & egg. Sift together flour, baking powder & salt - add to creamed mixture. Add vanilla & pecans, then add the date mixture. Pour into greased & floured 9 x 13 pan and bake at 350º 30 minutes...While still warm, pour icing (recipe below) over cake.
ICING: 1/2 cup plus 2 Tablespoons brown sugar, 1/2 cup plus 2 Tbs. cream and 4 Tbs. butter. Boil together 3 minutes, pour on cake and sprinkle with nuts and coconut....YUMMMMMMMM
