  • Use Standard Measurements For Your Recipes

Use Standard Measurements For Your Recipes

For many generations, recipes were handed down by word of mouth from mother to daughter. Recipes consisted of a little of this and a smidgin of that. The food always came our great – or at least that is what we told out mothers!

Today things are different. Computers make is easy to write down our recipes and share them with friends and family members over the Internet. However it is important to remember that cooking has a language of its own. It is a language of ingredients and measurements and directions. I believe the most important of these is measurements. If we did not have standard measurements for cooking, “T” could be a teaspoon, a tablespoons, a thimble full or a truck load! Here are a list of Standard Measures Abbreviations commonly used in recipes.

    teaspoon……………………… tsp.
    tablespoon…………………… tbsp. or T.
    cup…………………………….. c.
    quart…………………………… qt.
    ounce…………………………. oz.
    pint…………………………….. pt.
    gallon…………………………. gal.
    inch…………………………….. in.
    pound………………………….. lb.
    milliliter…………………………. ml
    liter……………………………….. L
    milligram……………………….. mg
    gram……………………………… g
    kilogram ……………………….. kg
    millimeter……………………… mm
    centimeter…………………….. cm
    meter……………………………. m
    Celsius…………………………… C
    Fahrenheit……………………. F

Another important thing about standard measurements is that they don’t work if you don’t use them! Including an ingredient in your recipe without a specific amount is likely to leave someone trying the recipe for the first time scratching their head and wondering what to do. Remember know one will know unless you include it in your recipe.

  • Family Cookbook Project Now Offers Hard Cover Option

Family Cookbook Project Now Offers Hard Cover Option

They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, however most people do. Family Cookbook Project announces a new, upgraded cookbook cover.  You can now select a hardcover binding that includes the name of the cookbook on the spine.

A hardcover option has been a popular request from many of our editors and you can now select that option for your cookbook under Layout & Design, Binder & Lamination Options.

A hardcover can be applied to either an 8 1/2 x 11 cookbook or our standard 8 ½ x 5 ½ cookbook. All of our existing covers are available for hardcovers as well as custom covers that the editors design.

The addition of a hardcover will impact the price of your cookbook by about six dollars per cookbook.  Shipping may be a bit higher with the added weight, too.

The hardcover binding has a page limit of 250 pages. This is usually more than enough for most cookbooks to print all of your best recipes.  Let us know what you think!

  • When To Use A Multi-Part Recipe

When To Use A Multi-Part Recipe

Have you ever had a cake recipe that really needed a specific frosting? Or a meat recipe that required a special sauce? Wouldn’t it be great if a a recipe could have sub recipes attached to keep them together?

Many of our editors have asked for the ability to have multiple sections or steps in recipes. We like to listen and have added it! Now you can have up to 5 “sub” recipes or steps within a recipe, each with its own set of ingredients and directions. Example? You have Carrot Cake and you want a section for the “Cake” with its ingredients and directions, then “Cream Cheese Frosting” with another set of ingredients and directions.

To use this feature, simply go to Add Recipe or Edit an existing recipe. First check the box for “Show subtitle and make a multi-part recipe” right under the contributor field. This will add a field for sub-recipe title.

Using our example above, here is where you would add your carrot cake ingredients and directions.

Next, click on the green button to “Add new sub recipe”. This will add fields for a second set of sub recipe title, ingredients and directions for your Cream Cheese Frosting.

You can add up to five sub recipes for your overall recipe.

When you are done, make sure to click on the green button on the bottom of the page to save your recipe before moving on to your next recipe.

  • How to Best Serve Oysters

    How to Best Serve Oysters

If you’ve ever been to Wellfleet OysterFest, you’ve seen thousands of people enjoying freshly opened Wellfleet Oysters by the bushel full – served on paper plates. While this might work for this huge event, there are better ways to serve them at home.

The difficulty of serving Wellfleet oysters is their non-uniform rounded bottom shape. Rarely will one have a flat bottom that allows the oyster meat and liqueur to stay in the shell. So there are a number of ways to present your oysters that will overcome this challenge.

    • Crushed Ice – Oysters on the half-shell should be served chilled. The best way to do that is to serve them on a bed of crushed ice. Most of us don’t have an ice machine at home that can churn out crushed ice on demand, but if you have a food processor, you’re in business. If you don’t have a food processor, you can try crushing ice in a blender or by hand with a mallet.  Once you have the needed ice, place it evenly in a rimmed bowl or serving dish. Add some salt to the ice which will help it not to melt as fast. Finally place your oysters onto the ice and you’re ready to serve.
    • Rock Salt – You can serve oysters on a bed of rock salt. Rock salt won’t melt like ice and can be used again and again if you save it. Like the ice, you can place it evenly in a rimmed bowl or serving dish and nestle the oysters onto the salt. The other option is to create small individual piles of salt and place an oyster on each one.
    • Aluminum Foil – You can serve oysters on a crinkled piece of aluminum foil. This is a great way to hold your oysters while you are shucking and it can make an effective low-cost presentation, especially if you have a lot of oysters to pass around.
    • Oyster Plate – Buy an Oyster plate. Wellfleet has many wonderful gift stores that offer many oyster related items. One popular item is an oyster plate with individual rounded areas that typically holds six oysters. It’s best to have a couple of these plates available to serve your Wellfleet oysters.

  • It’s Time To Start Thinking About Christmas

It’s Time To Start Thinking About Christmas

There is a reason why 90% of the cookbooks we print are submitted in late November and early December. Everyone knows that family cookbooks make great Christmas gifts! Everyone wants something personal and special to give to loved ones at the holidays and a family cookbook is makes the perfect gift.

Why is Family Cookbook Project telling you this in August? Well cookbooks don’t just happen by themselves, they need to be have recipes entered, professionally design covers selected and everything proofread before they are submitted for printing.

The time it takes to have your cookbook printed and shipped also more than doubles just before the holidays because of the sheer volume. So now is the time to put your efforts into your cookbook and have it completed and submitted for printing by the time September rolls around.

  • Unclutter Your Kitchen By Starting With Your Recipes

Unclutter Your Kitchen By Starting With Your Recipes

How many cookbooks do you have?

For most of us can love to cook, collecting cookbooks is a fact of life. We are always looking for the next great recipe and publish cookbooks are often a great resource.

However for many of us there are only a handful of go to recipes in any given cookbook. They sit in our kitchen, taking up space, waiting for the time we need to make that one recipe.

Well here’s a way two clean out your kitchen from all those cookbooks and put those recipes into a single, easy to use source for your favorite cookbook recipes – a compilation cookbook.

Since a premium membership with family cookbook project allows you to create multiple cookbooks at the same time, it is easy to create a special cookbook dedicated to the recipes that are in all of your other cookbooks.

When adding the recipe to your compilation cookbook, you can use the contributor field to list the cookbook where you originally found the recipe.

You should also be sure to mark your recipe private so it is not shared outside of your own cookbook account.

Family cookbook project also offers a handy recipe transfer tool for when you want to move some of those compilation recipes into your main cookbook without having to type them a second time.

Once you have entered your go to recipes into your compilation cookbook, you can then remove the original cookbook from your kitchen, freeing up space, and find a bookshelf somewhere else in the house where are you can collect your cookbooks without taking up kitchen space.

  • A New Take On Recipe Categories

A New Take On Recipe Categories

Recipe categories help us organize our recipes in an easy to browse format within your family cookbook.

By default, we offer eight standard recipe categories that are perfect for the majority of cookbook editors.

    List default recipe categories

We also give you the ability to create your own categories and add them to the existing categories or to create subcategories which helps to refine the Recipes even further.

But do you have to organize by food type? Absolutely not!

We have seen our editors organize their recipes by many different formats other than food types.

People – One popular way is to organize by person. When recipes are tribute to great past cooks in the family, you can have each category named for a specific person or even family. You then can use subcategories to further organize the recipes.

Meal – Another way people organize recipes is by meal. When organizing buy breakfast, lunch, dinner you often will get editors who use multi part recipes to list the entrées and the side dishes that go with it.

Holidays – Another popular way is to have categories for each holiday. We all have certain recipes that tend to come out only at specific holidays. By putting together a cookbook that lists all of the Thanksgiving, Christmas, family reunion, Valentine’s Day and other holiday recipes in one place, you know exactly where to go to prepare for that holiday.

Season – another way to organize your recipe is by seasons. Some recipes are too heavy to be eaten during the summer and others have fresh ingredients that are not available in the winter.

No matter how you organize your cookbook, family cookbook project makes it easy. We also offer the ability to create multiple cookbooks and transfer existing recipes into new cookbooks to help you make your cookbook publishing experience outstanding.
