1/2 lb. dates (1 cup)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup water
3 tablespoons lemon juice
3/4 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon soda
1 3/4 cups oatmeal - uncooked
1/2 teaspoon anise

Directions:
Directions:
Pit and shred dates - place in small saucepan with sugar. Stir cornstarch in a little water - then into 1 cup water and add to dates. Add lemon juice and cook stirring over low heat 5 minutes or until thickened - remove from heat - combine butter, anise, and brown sugar in bowl - cream together - sift flour, salt, and soda into creamy mixture. Mix well - add oats - mix into crumbly consistency. Spread half oatmeal crumbs into greased 9 X 13 X 2baking pan. Pour date filling o top. Cover with remaining crumbs. Press down lightly = bake at 400º for 23-30 minutes.
