2 cups small navy beans
Ham hocks
1 onion
salt and pepper to taste

Directions:
This is Mom's recipe word for word as she wrote it down.
2:45 – Put small navy beans on. Cleaned and washed at least 3 times. Be sure you pick out the rocks and sand. 2 cups navy beans.
Cover with water and bring to a boil – then simmer. Check to see they don’t simmer dry. Keep adding water.
5:00 – Add ham hocks, 1 small onion or onion flakes, ½ tsp. salt or to taste (later). Bring to boil again and simmer again.
Done at 6:30. Cornbread and slaw.

Personal Notes:
Finally, if you want to really customize Mary’s Navy Beans recipe, consider the old “baseball” flavoring Denny and Donny added on one occasion. Mom admonished the boys not to play catch in the house, but “boys will be boys” and, sure enough, the worn out old baseball ended up in the pot of Navy Beans already on the table. There’s no recall if any punishment for the in-house error was given, nor any recall if the boys had to run the bases in the house to escape Mom, but you can bet the Navy Beans were served anyhow to Harold and his six (or four innocent) hungry kids. It’s not very likely Mom looked for something else in the house to serve for dinner, and it’s not likely Donny and Denny added baseball flavoring to the Navy Beans (or any other recipe) ever again.
