1 c butter
1 1/2 c sifted powdered sugar
1 egg
1 t vanilla
2 1/2 C flour
1 t soda
1 t cream of tartar
1/4 t salt

Directions:
Directions:
Cream first 4 ingredients.
Add the remainder. Mix well. Chill dough.
Heat oven to 400º Bake for 8-10 min.

Cut-out cookies: Chill dough and roll out on floured counter. Cut and drop on greased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with sugar or apply frosting when cooled.
Snow Balls: Add chopped pecans to dough, chill and shape into balls by spoonfuls. Place on cookie sheet, bake as shown above, roll warm cookie into powdered sugar.
Cinnamon balls: Same as above but roll in 1/4 c sugar and 2 t cinnamon.
Jewel Clusters: Blend into dough, 1 t grated orange, 2 t orange juice, 1/2 c mixed fruit 1 c chopped nuts. Drop by spoonfuls onto cookie sheet and bake.
Butter Thins: Shape into 2" long rolls, chill and slice into 1/8". Optional: sprinkle toppings or coconut, nuts, colored sugar. Bake.
Molasses Spice Crisps: stir in 1/4 C molasses, 2 tsp cinnamon, 1 t ginger, 1/4 t nutmeg. Chill, roll into 2" logs, slice 1/8". sprinkle and bake.
