1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
1 egg
1 c. molasses or syrup
2 &1/2 c. flour
1&1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. hot water

Sift dry ingredients together. Cream butter and sugar. Add beaten egg and molasses to butter mixture, and then add all dry ingredients. Add hot water last, and beat until smooth.

Bake in greased 9x13 pan at 325 for 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
