1/2 lb. package dates (1 c. firmly packed cut dates)
1 c. boiling water
1 tsp. baking soda
3/4 c. shortening
1 c. and 2 tsp. sugar
2 eggs
1 c. all-purpose flour
3/4 c. whole wheat flour.
12 oz. chocolate chips
1 c. chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Place dates in a small bowl. Sprinkle baking soda on top of dates. Pour water over dates and let stand until cool.
Preheat oven to 350º.
In a mixing bowl, place shortening and 1 c. sugar. Cream together. Add eggs and beat until mixed in. Add. all-purpose flour and whole wheat flour alternately with the date mixture.
Grease an 8x12 inch pan. Pour cake batter into it. Sprinkle chocolate chips on top. Sprinkle chopped walnuts on top. Sprinkle about 2 tsps. of granulated sugar on top. Bake for 40 minutes or until done. These freeze well. Cut them first.
