1 pound red beans
1 28 oz can tomatoes
2 8 oz. cans tomato sauce
1 large onion, sliced
1 ham hock
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp brown sugar (if desired)
1 large clove garlic
1 tsp chili powder
2 tbsp catsup
salt to taste

Directions:
Rinse and soak red beans overnight, or cover with hot water and soak 2 hours. Bring to quick boil, drain and add 3 c fresh water. Add ham hock, tomatoes, tomato sauce, onion and garlic; simmer slowly for 6 to 7 hours. Remove ham bone and cut up ham; then mix in chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, catsup, brown sugar and salt. Water may be added if beans cook too dry.

Grandpa Owen noted that you can add 1/2 pound lean beef and 1 c onion soup for a different taste.
