3/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

1 1/2 c chopped pecans or walnuts

hot buttered rum sauce:
1 c sugar
1/2 c butter
1/2 c half-and-half

Cream butter; gradually add sugar, beating well at medium speed. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each.

Combine flour and next 5 ingredients; add to creamed mixture beating until blended. Stir in apples and nuts.

Pour batter into a greased and floured 13x9x2" baking pan. Bake at 325 for 50 to 55 minutes. Let cool completely in pan on a wire rack. Serve with hot buttered rum sauce.

Combine first 3 ingredients in a saucepan; cook over low heat, stirring occasionally until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat, and stir in rum.
