1 medium head of cabbage
½ cup sliced onion, optional
2 tbsp oil or bacon drippings
1 ¼ tsp salt
coarsely ground black pepper to taste
1 tbsp sugar
½-¾ cup water

Directions:
Directions:
Coarsley shred cabbage - pieces about 1 1/2 x 1/4 - 1/2 wide. Place shredded cabbage (and onion) in skillet on medium-low heat. Add water and oil or bacon drippings. Sprinkle sugar, salt and pepper over the cabbage. Cover and cook 15-20 minutes until desired degree of tenderness is reached (crisp cabbage cook about 15 minutes; for tender cabbage cook about 30 minutes). Add additional water as needed.
