1 cup sugar

1 cup chopped nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Squeeze juice of orange in cup, and fill cup with boiling water and pour over dates. Add soda and stir and then add shortening and beaten egg and sugar. Stir together. Sift flour and baking powder and salt and add this to above ingredients and beat. Add vanilla, beat, and then add nuts and stir entire mixture and bake in a greased loaf pan at 350 for 50 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
Cool for about 15 minutes and then turn loaf of bread out on wax paper until cool. I wrap in foil after bread has cooled and until ready to serve. It can be baked a day ahead. It is very moist and keeps well.
