Spice Cake Recipe

1 c. white sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. boiling water
1 t. cinnamon
1/4 t. cloves
1/2 t. salt

1 egg, well beaten
1 t. soda
1/2 t. baking powder
1 1/4 c. flour
1 t. vanilla
Nuts, if desired

Combine the sugar, shortening, boiling water, and spices in a sauce pan and boil gently for 4 minutes (after it begins to boil). Cool. Add: 1 well beaten egg, soda, baking powder, flour, and vanilla; can also add nuts if desired.
Pour into prepared 8x8 cake pan.
Bake approximately 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
