1/2 cup butter
1 Ib. light brown sugar (the whole package)
3 eggs
2 Square melted unsweetened chocolate
2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup sour milk (2tsp.vinegar to sour)
1/2 tsp salt
2 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp.baking soda dissolved in 1 cup boiling water

Preheat oven 375º
Cream butter, sugar, beat until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time-beat well. Add vanilla and chocolate, beat well. Add sour milk, beat. Add salt and flour, blend it will be very thick. Add boiling water with baking soda. Mix until just blended. Pour immediately into a heavily greased and floured pan.9x13 or two rounds. Cook for ten minutes on 375º. Then lower the temperature to 350º, cook 30-35 minutes. Do not open the oven door before 25 minutes. Remove from pan after 5 minutes on a cooling rack. Elevate rack at 3 inches off the counter.

This is a very special cake that Tim's Grammy made his whole life. His Uncle Stephen now has taken over the job at family gatherings. We prefer a vanilla frosting but its sweet enough to just sprinkle with powdered sugar.
