2 tbsp shortening (large)
1/4 tsp salt
1 heaping cup sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup Hershey’s cocoa, dissolved in 1/2 cup hot water
1 cup sour milk (can)
2 1/4 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda

Frosting:
1 box (15 oz) raisins
1 box confectioners sugar
1/4 cup oleo (margarine)
1 tsp maple flavoring

Directions:

Beat together the shortening, salt, sugar, eggs, cocoa (dissolved in hot water), and sour milk until well blended.

In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and baking soda.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the cocoa mixture, mixing until smooth.

Pour batter into two greased and floured 8-inch or 9-inch cake pans.

Bake at 350ºF. until done.

30–35 minutes for two 8-inch pans

25–30 minutes for two 9-inch pans

Cool completely before frosting or serving.

Frosting: Grind 1 box raisins and mix with 1 box confectioners’ sugar, then add 1/4 cup melted oleo (margarine) and 1 tsp maple flavoring; blend well, adjust so that it is of spreading consistency (measurements are approximate).

How to make sour milk - add 1 tbsp. vinegar or lemon juice to 1 cup milk and let stand 5–10 minutes until slightly thickened.
