1 cup sugar
½ cup brown sugar, packed
½ cup shortening
½ cup butter
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla extract

2 cup flour, sifted
2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp cream of tartar
½ tsp salt

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together the sugars, shortening, and butter. Beat in the egg. Add the vanilla and mix.
Sift together the flour, soda, cream of tartar, and salt. Add to butter mixture and mix well.
Roll dough into small balls and roll in sugar.
Place on ungreased baking sheet. Do not flatten the dough.

Bake at 400° for 12 minutes

Food coloring can be added to dough to make it more festive. You could also roll the balls in colored sugar, if desired.
