2/3 c sugar
1/4 c shortening
1 t vanilla
1 egg

1 1/2 c flour
2 t baking powder
1/4 t salt
1/2 c milk

1 quart strawberries
3/4 c sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Pre heat oven to 325º
Clean and hull the strawberries, mash them in a large bowl. Cover with sugar and let chill for couple hours.

Beat together the first four ingredients till smooth.
Sift together the dry ingredients into the wet mixture add the milk and stir till smooth.
Pour into greased and floured 13 x 9 cake pan.
Bake for about 15 to 20 minutes or until brown.
Let cool slightly cut and serve with strawberries over top.

Mom used to mash the strawberries with a tin can that Dad had cut the top off so it had a sharp edge and had punched a hole in the bottom of can.
I like this shortcake better then those spongy ones, since it doesn't get soggy so quick.
